The founders of HealthyPaws are passionate about their pets and this led them to creating the company. The founders and therefore the company strongly believe that every pet should be loved and well cared for. They are advocates of rescuing and have a partnership with the non-profit Foundation of the same name that has helped thousands of homeless pets find homes.

Enrollment Requirements

Your pet must have had an exam within the last 12 month or within 15 days after enrollment, but you do not need to send in the result of the exam unless the vet finds something wrong. All pets under the age of 14 years may be eligible for coverage.

$25,000 lifetime maximum per insured pet. HealthyPaws is in the process of getting this limit lifted, but since it is a state to state process for approval, it may take up to a year for this to be available.

Premiums

Premiums depend greatly on what kind of coverage you choose and range from roughly $12 to $100 a month.

Policy Renewal

Policies are renewed annually, and coverage is continuous. In other words, there is no waiting period with each policy renewal and conditions your pet has received treatment for under a previous policy do not become pre-existing.

No, unless your pet has not been examined within the last 12 months or is older than 6 years and has not been examined within the last 30 days.

Bilateral Conditions Policy

Cruciate Ligament problems that occur bilaterally are not covered if the first incidence occurred prior to enrollment or during the waiting period.

Hereditary Disorders

Yes, provided your pet has not shown and signs or symptoms before coverage begins. A 12 month waiting period for hip dysplasia is required if your dog is younger than 6 years; if your dog is 6 years or older, then hip dysplasia will not be covered.

Congenital Disorders

Yes, provided your pet has not shown any signs or symptoms before coverage begins.

Wellness Care

No coverage is available.

Dental Care

Periodontal disease and routine care are not covered under any circumstances; however, in the event of an accident that causes damage to the teeth and mouth, the costs of extraction and reconstruction of the teeth are covered.

Cancer

Cancerous conditions that are not pre-existing are covered up to the lifetime maximum.

Pregnancy

No coverage is available.

Travel Coverage

Coverage is provided in all 50 US states and Canada. If you and your pet travel outside this area, no coverage is available.

Riders

Riders are not available with this company.

How Long Until Coverage Begins

There is a 15 day waiting period before any coverage begins; there is a 12 month waiting period for hip dysplasia coverage if your dog is eligible for coverage.

Exclusions

Pre-existing conditions, wellness or preventative care, the veterinary office visit fee, parasite control, dental care, anal gland expression, feeding, housing, exercise, behavioral problems, medications for behavioral problems or modification, training, therapy for behavioral problems, or anything that can be easily prevented. Because policies are issued from state to state, these exclusions may be different in your area. Please be certain to follow the #1 Ruleand read the policy.

Types of Policies

There are two policies available; one for dogs and one for cats. Deductibles and co-pays are customizable; otherwise, the policy for each species is very straightforward. A sample policy is available here.
